Map collection, 1779-1983.

Manuscript and printed maps, blueprints, lot surveys, topographical and road maps, and mountain trail maps, 1779-1983. Geographic locations include the Hudson River, individual estates and lots, the villages of Catskill and Coxsackie, the Catskill Mountains, Hardenburgh Patent, Greene County, Ulster County, New York State, and the United States. Also, maps of local plants and industries and recreational tours and cruises. Of note are bird's eye views of mountain resorts, ca. 1884, and the Catskills, 1879; original maps by Walton Van Loan, 1883-1891; Sanborn insurance maps for Catskill, 1889; and original survey maps by G.W. Goetchius, 1920s.

The Sanborn Map Company was founded in 1867 with headquarters in New York City. Its purpose was to produce maps that would show "at a glance the character of the fire insurance risks of all buildings" in a give community. Since these maps had a very specialized use, "there were usually fewer than twenty orders for a single map sheet".
